What to expect for The World of Studio Ghibli at ArtScience Museum Singapore

Studio Ghibli fans, mark your calendar if you’ve always dreamt about exploring its magical realms at the first The World of Studio Ghibli exhibition in Singapore at ArtScience Museum.
Organised in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, ArtScience Museum Singapore will bring the fantastical realms created by the Japanese animation powerhouse to life. This travelling exhibition also marks Singapore’s first official Studio Ghibli exhibition.
Opening on 4 October, The World of Studio Ghibli will showcase till 2 February 2025.
Get captivated by groundbreaking animation, storytelling, and beloved characters from four decades of work by Studio Ghibli.
ArtScience Museum, in one of its biggest transformations to date, will set the stage for The World of Studio Ghibli with 11 galleries spanning 2,400m2. Anticipate a showcase of 11 cherished Studio Ghibli films coming to life, like My Neighbour Totoro (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001) and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004).
Transport yourself to one of 16 large-scale theatrical sets of iconic Studio Ghibli movie scenes. Visitors can experience waiting in the rain with Totoro, entering Howl’s Moving Castle, and hopping on a train with No-Face.
Through 16 whimsical art installations, visitors can explore the intricate creative processes that go into each frame of a Studio Ghibli film. The immersive mediums include interactive box art pieces and trick-eye installations.
Unravel the secret to magical moments from the laboratory of Kokiri the witch from Kiki’s Delivery Service, to a close-up of the letter Satsuki wrote to her mother about meeting Totoro.
In conjunction with ArtScience Museum’s ‘Year of Extraordinary Women’, The World of Studio Ghibli will spotlight the diverse female protagonists across its films.
This focus brings forth various resonance themes with its audiences – from nature and environmentalism, coming-of-age and self-discovery, to technology and war, faced by the female protagonists.
Want a cuddly Totoro? Visitors should make a beeline at the end of the exhibition. Here, fans can obtain official Studio Ghibli merchandise and souvenirs designed exclusively and on sale for this ArtScience Museum exhibition.
The World of Studio Ghibli was first presented in Japan in 2013 followed by South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and most recently, Bangkok. The exhibition has undergone several changes over the years, with this upcoming iteration featuring new additions from Studio Ghibli’s latest film The Boy and the Heron (2023).
Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 by directors Isao Takahata, Hayao Miyazaki, and producer Toshio Suzuki. Known for its award-winning animated films which range from magical adventures to enchanted tales based on everyday life like Spirited Away (2001) and The Boy and the Heron (2023), they also made film history by becoming the first group to be awarded Honorary Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Tickets go on sale through the Marina Bay Sand website to the public from 3 August, 10am onwards. The World of Studio Ghibli will run from 4 October 2024 to 2 February 2025.
