Surrounded by 40 peaks, each above 4,000 metres, Valais is truly a little piece of heaven. The third largest canton in Switzerland, it is blessed with a diverse landscape that has everything from majestic mountains and glaciers to picturesque valleys and vineyards. It is also home to the Matterhorn, one of the most iconic mountains in Switzerland, if not the world.
While Valais is naturally a prime destination for winter holidays thanks to its mountainous landscape, the canton is as charming in springtime. During this time of the year, it promises a wide range of unique experiences, from nature exploration to exquisite spirits tasting.

What’s a better way to celebrate the return of the sun and blossoming flowers than enjoying the outdoors? Nendaz, situated above the Rhone Valley, would be the perfect choice for this. The resort, blessed with views of the Vaud Alps, offers great fun for everyone – from avid nature lovers to families with children. There, visitors can go hiking, biking, and ziplining. There are also a number of courses for those wishing to try trail running. Meanwhile, young vacationers can enjoy special programmes such as curling sessions, creative workshops, and biscuit making.
Known locally as Lac Souterrain de St. Léonard, the Underground Lake of St. Leonard was initially discovered in 1943 and has been open to the public since 1949. It is situated 30 to 70 metres under some beautiful vineyards, and is the biggest natural, underground lake in Europe, spanning 300-metre long and 20-metre wide. Visitors can take a 30-minute guided tour on a boat to learn about the lake’s history as we explore the crystal-clear water.
Thermal springs are known for their healing properties, as well as being simply enjoyable. On that note, Valais is home to Leukerbad Therme, the biggest thermal bath in the Alpine region. It has three indoor pools and seven outdoor pools, along with water slides, water massage beds, and a children’s paddle pool. An array of treatment facilities, including a dry sauna, a hammam, and hydromassage showers are also available on site.
The district of Martigny has a special destination for dog lovers: Barryland. Paying tribute to the national dog of Switzerland – the St. Bernard – the establishment was established in 2006. Here, visitors can learn about the dog and check out a permanent exhibition showcasing various objects related to the Great St. Bernard Hospice, where the eponymous canines were originally bred as rescue dogs. Furthermore, visitors can meet the St. Bernards in the dog area, and even take a walk with them.
For the final stop of this journey through Valais, Morand Distillery in Martigny comes highly recommended. The family-run business was established in 1889 and has since played a pivotal role in Valais’ spirits culture. Visitors and liquor aficionados alike are invited to taste an array of world-class products, from brandy and plant-based gin to cœur and mousse.
