Cover Story: The Charmed Life of Janisa “Buum” Areevanich

Striking out on her own was no walk in the park, but this purposeful journey eventually blossomed into a fruitful career as a full-time equity investor.
The family legacy of Janisa “Buum” Areevanich traces back to her great-grandfather, a visionary businessman from Fujian, who embarked on a transformative journey to Thailand over 140 years ago. Establishing himself as a premier distributor of internationally acclaimed consumer brands, he laid the cornerstone of what would become the Areevanich surname, meaning “kind-hearted merchant”.
Known affectionately as A-gong (Grandfather in Chinese), Buum’s grandfather pioneered the family’s foray into the world of high jewellery some 80 years ago (around 1940). His expertise not only shaped the family’s business trajectory but also fostered invaluable connections that would later benefit Buum’s father.
Following in A-gong’s illustrious footsteps, Buum’s father assumed the helm of their high jewellery enterprise half a century ago. Along with the ownership of a distinguished high jewellery atelier, he sources diamonds and gemstones from origins around the globe, delivering exquisite craftsmanship to discerning clientele in elite markets.
His working principles of diligence, honesty, and unwavering integrity have defined Buum’s father’s business approach. These principles are not merely values, but the bedrock upon which customer trust is built – an essential currency in their profession that demands nothing less than the highest standards of reliability and expertise.
After earning her Bachelor’s degree, Buum embarked on an ambitious academic journey that spanned continents. Her first stop was Bournemouth University in the United Kingdom, where she immersed herself in language study, laying a solid foundation for her future endeavours. Fuelled by her passion for the field that is the family tradition, she then pursued a Master’s degree in International Fashion Marketing at Coventry University’s London Campus – a choice influenced by the program’s exclusivity in London’s academic landscape at that time as well.
Her time in London was more than just academic; it was a whirlwind of cultural immersion and professional growth. Attending prestigious fashion events in London and even venturing to Paris, France, she gained invaluable insights into the intricacies of the fashion and textile industries. These experiences not only enriched her understanding but also broadened her strategic vision in business.
For the post-graduation, she ventured across the Atlantic to intern at Lear Corporation, a prominent Fortune Top 500 company based in the United States. This one year experience provided her with a firsthand glimpse into corporate dynamics and global business practices, setting the stage for her future career aspirations.
Seeking further academic enrichment and cultural immersion, she made her way to Shanghai, where she dedicated herself to mastering the Chinese language at both Jiaotong University and Fudan University. Upon completing her studies, she secured a coveted internship at an equity investment company in Shanghai, under the guidance of a company owner who was not only a close family friend but also a distinguished figure recognised among Shanghai’s top 50 successful individuals that year.
Buum’s journey abroad has been a monument to her relentless pursuit of knowledge, cultural appreciation, and professional excellence – a journey marked by transformative experiences that continue to shape her global perspective and aspirations in the ever-evolving landscape of international business.
In the corridors of Saint Joseph Convent School in Bangkok metropolitan, Janisa’s academic journey began with a keen ear and a diligent spirit. Known for her exceptional grades and impeccable manners, she left a lasting impression on her teachers, who regularly praised her for her natural kindness and compassionate nature.
Her mother, a firm believer in the transformative power of childhood, encouraged Buum to explore a myriad of interests beyond the classroom. Weekends and holidays became opportunities for gymnastics, artistic pursuits, music lessons, language studies (including public speaking), and personal development courses. At the tender age of nine, before even reaching double digits, she had a diverse education that even included mastering the art of wine glass placement at festive occasions.
Her academic prowess led her to Triam Udom Suksa School, in Bangkok’s Phaya Thai District, reputed to be one of the best secondary schools in Thailand. Here she specialised in science, with a focus on Japanese studies. Beyond academics, Triam Udom Suksa provided a nurturing environment where she forged enduring bonds with teachers and classmates alike. These connections have endured over the years, up until the present day, offering Buum unwavering support and companionship that remain a cherished part of her journey into adulthood.
As her secondary school years drew to a close, she took a leap of faith and applied into an esteemed Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy of Thammasat University, which is considered to be among the top universities in Thailand. Accepted into a rigorous five-year program, she discovered her profound love for business management.
But it wasn’t just the thrill of generating ideas that captivated her, it was the analytical challenge of dissecting business strategies and their real-world applications – an academic pursuit that seamlessly merged with her intrinsic curiosity and drive. Moreover, the experience at Thammasat also fortified lifelong friendships; a journey that continues to inspire and shape her journey towards success.
Buum’s academic journey – from a diligent student at Saint Joseph Convent School to a dedicated scholar at Triam Udom Suksa and finally a budding business strategist at the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy – remains a testament to her unwavering dedication and the transformative power of a well-rounded education during her academic years in Thailand.
For Janisa, life is a journey filled with exploration and cultural immersion. From traversing through iconic historical landmarks to delving into the depths of museums, every adventure is a quest to uncover the world’s rich tapestry of history and art.
A connoisseur of fine dining, she delights in sampling diverse cuisines from around the world, always seeking dishes that highlight the essence of quality and the origins of their ingredients. Each culinary experience becomes a window into a country’s traditions and flavours, blending taste with cultural discovery.
Beyond cultural pursuits, she also finds exhilaration in sports. Whether gliding on a jet ski across the water, or riding on horseback, the thrill – and skill – of such movement never fails to challenge her in new and exciting ways.
Her love for the arts, meanwhile, extends to the theatre and stage, where she finds solace and inspiration in the graceful movements of ballet performances and the electrifying energy of concerts. Among her favourite bands are the legendary group Coldplay, and The Beatles with their timeless melodies.
In moments of relaxation, Janisa cherishes the company of her three beloved dogs: Sugar, a gentle Chihuahua, and two spirited Pomeranians, Polar and Hockey – all of them adorned with snowy white coats. Their playful antics bring both joy and companionship, creating cherished memories in the tranquility of home.
For this lady, life isn’t just lived; it’s celebrated through a tapestry of experiences that blend curiosity, passion, and the joy of discovery – a life well-lived and the pursuit of happiness in every moment.
When asked about her guiding principles in life, Buum replied, “I cherish time, love, and relationships as my most sacred treasures. With a forward-thinking approach, I meticulously plan my journey to attain happiness, believing it to be the ultimate key to everything.
“I feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by a community of compassionate souls whose warmth and generosity light up my path,” she continues. “Their presence enriches my life in ways that defy description, reminding me daily of the deep beauty inherent in genuine human connections.”
