Hong Kong Athletes to Receive Highest Cash Bonus for Winning Gold Medal

Not only is winning an Olympic gold medal a tremendous accomplishment but for some countries and territories, it will also mean financial security. Check out the amount Hong Kong and other countries are offering for the gold medal payout bonus.
Numbers have slowly been rolling out on what each region will be paying its athletes if they bring home gold. With Vivian Kong’s recent gold medal victory in women’s fencing (épée), news on the payout has made its way to international news as the amount of USD 768,000 (HKD 6 million) is almost triple the second-highest payout.
Hong Kong’s payouts were raised 20 percent from the Tokyo Olympics, with silver getting a bump to HKD 3 million, and bronze HKD 1.5 million. On top of podium finisher payouts, Hong Kong will also award fourth to eighth place with cash awards ranging from HKD 375,000 to 750,000. Teams that win gold will be awarded up to HKD 12 million, collectively.

The Olympic medal itself is a valuable piece of metal as the Chaumet-designed award features a hexagon iron plate at the center as a representation of Paris’ Eiffel Tower as viewed below. The design goes a step further by using material that was salvaged from the actual Eiffel Tower during its last renovation, where it has been set into the medals.
