North Korea is opening up its borders once again after the pandemic as it preps the city of Samjiyon for tourists.
After a prolonged closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, North Korea is set to partially reopen its borders to international tourists. The northeastern city of Samjiyon will be the first to welcome visitors in North Korea starting in December 2024. This marks a significant step towards reviving the country’s tourism industry.
While international flights to North Korea resumed in 2023, only a small group of tourists from Russia visited the country for a short tour, timed to coincide with the then-ongoing efforts to strengthen ties between Russia and North Korea.
Located near the Chinese border and nestled at the foot of the sacred Mount Paektu (Paektu mountain peak holds immense significance in North Korean mythology and folklore), Samjiyon has undergone extensive development in recent years as part of North Korea’s ambitious Phase 3A expansion project. The city boasts modern infrastructure, including new hotels, apartments, a revamped airport, a ski resort, and extensive medical, commercial, and cultural amenities, making it an attractive destination for visitors.
The reopening of Samjiyon is part of North Korea’s broader plan to launch and expand tourism in the country. While specific details about the reopening of other cities, including Pyongyang, are yet to be revealed, this initial step is a positive sign for the tourism industry.
It’s important to note that travel to North Korea is subject to strict regulations and requires careful planning. Travellers should be aware of the potential risks and limitations associated with visiting the country.
