With summer in full swing, it’s time to enjoy these lazy sunny days with the best of what brunchtime has to offer.
If all-day breakfast can be a thing, why not the same for a lengthy brunch? The one-Michelin-star Louise’s new extension, La Terrace by Louise, is now open and offers patrons a menu of 21 brunch-friendly dishes that are available both for lunch and dinner. Among the highlights from executive chef Loïc Portalier are mimolette arancini, shrimp toast topped with pike caviar and lemon, leek terrine with parmesan, Gribiche sauce and croutons, octopus served with Romesco sauce and grilled vegetables, and the signature half-roasted yellow chicken.
Since opening on Ship Street half a year ago, chefs Marcello Scognamiglio and Félix De Arriaga Balanzat’s modern Italian joint Trattoria Felino has quickly become a neighbourhood favourite. If you’ve yet to try it, their latest brunch menu – it includes everything from sea-urchin spaghetti with garlic oil and chilli pepper or frittatine with bucatini pasta rolls, bechamel, cooked ham and beef ragut to Hamachi crudo with cucumber, lemon and smoked artichoke dressing – can be your perfect starting point.
Over at the newly opened Casa Sophia Loren, which now occupies Wanchai’s historic Woo Cheong Pawn Shop, oyster-lovers can rejoice in a free flow of their favourite shellfish as part of the restaurant’s Riviera Weekend Brunch menu. Aside from unlimited oysters for three hours, the Saturday exclusive, which runs from 12pm to 4pm, includes mains such as seafood fettuccine, calamarata sausages, pan-seared black cod, lobster spaghetti with cherry tomatoes and lemon zest, and charcoal-grilled lamb chops. Desserts include the signature Nutella tiramisu and a monthly selection of sorbets and ice creams.
Possibly Britain’s best export since fish and chips, a luxurious Sunday roast is just the right motivation to get you out of bed for one last hurrah before the work week arrives. On the third Sunday of August and September at Magistracy Dining Room, newly appointed chef Alyn Williams has put his own contemporary twist on this brilliant tradition, presenting dishes such as prawn-cocktail crumpets, steak tartare, crispy crackling pork belly, slow-cooked rib of beef, dover sole goujons, three yellow chicken pie, and roasted Ora King salmon.
With the return of chef Cary Docherty to the Island Shangri-La’s Lobster Bar and Grill, the restaurant has revamped its menu, which now includes a lovely Sunday brunch. Indulge in classics such as prawn cocktail, freshly shucked oysters, lobster bisque, roast beef, lamb or pork with all their trimmings, grilled or poached whole Boston lobster with garlic or lemon butter, and desserts such as the triply chocolate mud pie, banoffee pie and, our all-time favourite, apple tart tatin. Ramping things up a further notch, a dedicated Bloody Mary trolley serves what’s arguably the classic brunchtime cocktail.
