Redress Design Award 2024: 5 Designers To Know

Hong Kong is preparing to host the 2024 Redress Design Award, the world’s leading sustainable fashion design competition, aiming to teach young designers about sustainable design theories and techniques in order to drive growth towards a circular fashion system. The competition has picked 10 international finalists who each created collections that are simultaneously fashionable and eco-friendly.
The Grand Final show, organised by Prestige Woman of Power honouree Christina Dean, will be live-streamed from Hong Kong on September 5 and we’re excited to see which designer comes out on top. Here are our top picks for the winner…
Tiger Chung
Tiger Chung is a rising star on the Hong Kong fashion scene, having won My Favourite collection in 2023 at the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest (YDC) for their Whispers From The Nomad—A Folk Horror Tale. This year, Chung submitted their new collection, The Wanderer/無依者, to Redress Design Award, which has reached the finals. Inspired by “street wanderers”, their collection is a reflection of the wealth disparity within fashion. Living in a city with an increasingly large wealth gap, Chung’s work could be interpreted as a comment on Hong Kong’s socio-economic environment. Using up-cycled materials – from curtains and towels to seat covers and mattresses – Chung has created not only a stunning clothing line, but thought-provoking pieces of art.
Louise Boase
Australian designer Louise Boase has created a playful and stylish collection named DISSECT for this years Redress Design Award. Made sustainably, she uses 100% natural fibres to bring her sketches to life. Boase dissects the standard uniform recreating it to make it more sustainable, constructing a ‘social uniform’ that can be worn in different ways. Reinventing current trends, Boase has kept her collection fun and versatile. She has added her own personal touches to her work such as incorporating centipedes into her patterns, paying homage to her upbringing in Australia.
Silvia Acien Parrilla
Based in the United Kingdom, Silvia Acien Parrilla has been making waves with her brand Acien. With an already impressive resume, the Spanish-born designer has been featured in Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, won the Maison/0 x LVMH Green Trial Award and the Frameworks Knitters Award, among others. Her works create a feeling of nostalgia with their vibrant colours, knit textures and playful silhouettes. Above all, they are simply breathtaking. REGENERATIVE FOLKLORE, her most recent collection submitted for the Redress Design Award, is a tribute to the rural landscapes of Spain where she grew up. Using techniques she learnt from her grandmother, her biodegradable collection is a play on the word “regeneration”. She uses plant-based materials, sourced from organic fibres such as pineapples, cotton and bananas, to create her sustainable fabrics.
Tian Ruyin
Moving between London and Shanghai, Tian Ruyin has made one of the most poignant and personal collections this season. Inspired by her grandmother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, the STRAP STRIPE collection uses linear patterns and folded silhouettes to mirror how patients suffering from this condition rely on structure and order as a coping mechanism. Using recycled fibres, she makes sure that there is zero-waste of materials, creating sustainable pieces.
Zari Qanei
Iranian designer Zari Qanei has submitted a collection that reflects nature’s dominance over humans. In line with the Redress Design Award’s focus on sustainability, The Mystery of Wilderness uses up-cycled textile waste to create unique silhouettes that are inspired by her home in Iran. Her pieces are designed to be used everyday, from the monotone colours to the practical features.
